Halebidu

We always linked our trip to Belur with Halebidu as it is 15 kms away.
In 12th Century the Hoysalas moved their capital from Belur to Halebidu. This place was known as Dwara Samudra, the wealthy capital of Hoysalas. During this period Ketamala built the  Hoysaleshwara temple. The temple complex comprises of Hoysaleshwara temple, Kedareshwara temple and two Jain Temples. Just like Belur it is the home to the best examples of Hoysala Architecture.

The walls of the temple are covered with endless variety of depictions from Hindu mythology, animals, birds and dancing figures. Yet no two sculptures of the temple are the same.

As per Hindu Mythology bull serves as the mount (vahana) of Lord Shiva and as the gate keeper of Shiva and Parvati. Temples venerating Shiva display images of a seated Nandi, facing main shrine. As Hoysaleshwara and Kedareshwara temples are dedicated to Lord Shiva, there are two Monolithic statues of Nandi (Bull) on the sides of both the temples.
